| Topic |
Composite Materials (Carbon Fibers) |
| Presenters |
Professor Stephen W. Tsai and Dr. Kim Parnell |
| Synopsis |
SMP's first "Meet the Experts" Forum
of 2012 will be on Composite Materials and the venue
will be Sparky's Hot Rod Garage, as specialty composites
are widely used in automobiles, race cars, high
performance bicycles, and sports equipment.
The Composites Forum will be held Tuesday, February
28th. Our featured speaker will be Dr. Stephen
Tsai. Dr. Tsai is a member of both the National
Academy of Engineering and the American Society
of Mechanical Engineering and has been active
in the International Conference on Composite Materials.
Dr. Tsai will be speaking on the process and product
development of composite materials and how it
may lead to improved design practice and commercialization.
His current research interest is the multi-angle
thin-ply NCF (non crimp fabric) that can lead
to new opportunities in design and manufacturing.
Also speaking is Dr. Kim Parnell. Dr. Parnell
is an Adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering
at Santa Clara University and previous Visiting
Associate Professor at Stanford. Dr. Parnell spent
13 years with Exponent Failure Analysis Associates
and was a Senior Managing Engineer. His talk will
include a discussion on delamination and cohesive
elements for finite element simulation.
After the complimentary buffet lunch, enjoy retro
desserts served in the 50's Diner. Our last Forum
at Sparky’s, on Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles,
was jam-packed, so you should register now to
reserve your spot |

|
| Topic |
Plastic Injection Molding of Biomedical Products |
| Presenters |
Howard Mullin President of Control Plastics |
| Synopsis |
This Forum will review engineering design fundamentals,
material selection guidelines and quality strategies
for injection molded plastic parts. Howard Mullin
of Control Plastics will discuss what you need
to know to design and procure plastic molded parts
that work. He will discuss design compromises,
as well as the most common problems associated
with the design, use of 3-D data bases, control
drawings, tooling and manufacture of injection
molded plastic parts.

Geometric Dimensioning
and Tolerancing
Thursday, September
27, 2012
| Date |
Thursday, September 27, 2012 - 10:30
AM to 12:30 PM |
| Location |
Advanced Machining Techniques, Inc. 16205 Vineyard
Boulevard, Morgan Hill, CA 95037
|
| Topic |
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) |
| Presenters |
John Feuerhelm of Precision Tool and Frank Dutra
of Advanced Machining Techniques |
| Synopsis |
The Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
Forum will focus on Geometric Dimensioning and
Tolerancing as the language of symbols used on
mechanical drawings to efficiently and accurately
communicate geometry requirements for features
on parts and assemblies.
Frank Dutra, of Advanced Machining Techniques.
will explain the essential elements required on
a part drawing to ensure the quality of a manufactured
part. Frank will also discuss the cost implications
associated with the over and under use of GD&T
on part drawings.
John Feuerhelm, of Precision Tool Distributors,
will focus on GD&T and the language of symbols
used on mechanical drawings to efficiently and
accurately communicate geometry requirements for
features on parts and assemblies. He will provide
detailed information on the correct use of GD&T
on engineered part drawings.
After the presentations, there will be door prize
drawings and a complimentary lunch for all attendees. |
