Designing Parts for Machining & Finishing
November 17, 2010
The SMP “Meet the
Experts” Designing Parts for Machining and Finishing
Forum will include discussions
and examples of items commonly found on engineering
drawings that drive up the cost of machining and finishing
of fabricated parts as well as a discussion of techniques
that can be used to avoid common engineering design
pitfalls. The presentations will also cover fundamental
issues associated with the selection of finish operations
such powder coating, masking and silk screening.
This Forum will also include a facilities
tour of AMT which will include a demonstration of their
two unmanned Mazak horizontal milling cell systems and
a robot loading Lathe Center. After
the presentations there will be door prize drawings
and a complimentary lunch for all attendees.

Designing
Parts for Machining and Finishing Overview.
We will visit the shop floor of Advanced Machining Techniques
(AMT) where you will see examples of advanced machining
centers in operation. The machining demonstrations will
be coupled with a presentation of how different approaches
to machining yield different run times and their respective
cost saving advantages.
Scientific
Metal Finishing will discuss coating specifications
for painting, powder coating, substrate preparation,
masking and silk screening as related to cost and quality.
The presentation will include time-line information
as well as environmental issues related to air quality
and hazardous materials.
SMP Tech, Inc. will discuss the factors that drive fabricated
part costs and that slow down the release of product
into manufacturing. The presentation will include a
demonstration of a template that can be used to estimate
the cost of parts during development as well as for
production.
